Rayleigh approximation
Rayleigh–Gans approximation, also known as Rayleigh–Gans–Debye approximation and Rayleigh–Gans–Born approximation, is an approximate solution to light scattering by optically soft particles. Optical softness implies that the relative refractive index of particle is close to that of the surrounding medium. The approximation holds for particles of arbitrary shape that are relatively small but can be larger than Rayleigh scattering limits. Websky. The phase function of Rayleigh scattering looks rather like a symmetric potato, and depends on the scattering angle as: IRay(cos Θ) = 3 4 (1+cos2(Θ)). (7) 3.2. Mie Scattering If the particles are of similar size or a bit larger than the wavelength, the Rayleigh approximation can not be used. The scattering of spherical particles can

Rayleigh scattering is a good approximation of the manner in which light scattering occurs within various media for which scattering particles have a small size . A portion of the beam of light coming from the sun scatters off molecules of gas and other small particles in the atmosphere.
